BIOGRAPHY

Part of the early rave scene, L.A. native Dylan James acquired his first turntables in 1994. He felt a kinship with this new dawn of electronic music that dispensed with all the usual conventions and points of authority. It offered new pastures and a chance for metamorphosis from the old system. He found his new calling written among the symbols of his own name, and stripped his moniker down to Deej.

Fueled by his passion and a potential vision of the future, Deej worked on his art form of mixing for 16 hours a day, quite often after shopping the Record Shops in Los Angeles. This was a labour of love and a chance to explore his gift, and in 1997 he was playing L.A. parties with great and influential acts like Simply Jeff, Thomas Michael, Thee-O, Curious, Jason Blakemore, Ron D Core and R.A.W.

“One of the only true gifts I have is mixing records. It comes naturally to me. I have always had a deep passion for it and consider it to be just about my favorite thing to do.”

In 2003, Deej decided on a professional hiatus, to mold his vision and perfect his alchemy. In 2005, he reappeared in Florida, already playing shows and dominating the local scene. The real catalyst came in 2007, when Stupid Fly Records and Abducted Dub joined forces to bring 12th Planet, Babylon System, AK1200, and others to Jacksonville for the epic Audible Warfare. After running Abducted Dub for a few months, Deej seized the opportunity and started his very own Betamorph Recordings. Alongside graphic artist Chris McCahill (aka Megatron), Betamorph began to offer its unique blend of subterranean sci-fi: raw and visceral tunes framed by galactic images symbolizing the capabilities of Dubstep.

“I’ve always loved all genres of electronic dance music. I’ve been mesmerized by the way that people are deeply affected by music and how it has the ability of truly bringing people together. You can’t fake it. It’s real.”

Drawing his eclectic influences from across Drum and Bass, Breaks, House and even a little Pink Floyd, Betamorph has given Deej the perfect platform to unleash his vision of tomorrow’s noise on both national and global levels. With Betamorph growing exponentially this year, 2009 has been a year for traveling, marketing the Betamorph name and dropping tunes in Austin, Houston, Louisiana, Chicago, Orlando, and at least several times in Atlanta. Highlights included Deej’s opening set for Scuba in May, the honor of opening for DZ’s Chicago show in August, as well as an epic headlining show for Ghost Industries in September called ESP. Now represented by FurtherSound Management, Deej is already cementing his place alongside the legends.

Although Betamorph are handling the future, as an individual, Deej certainly knows how to handle a tune. Through my own experience I have learnt this, but I feel my description cannot do his talent justice. Perhaps because I resent the word ‘tune’, as too many people will always say ‘choon’ instead. ‘Choon’ is the noise a train makes, not a fair description for precise yet aggressive Dubstep. Although I can imagine the results if Deej was put in charge of audio transport as well. It wouldn’t be the ghost train to Hell that all those pussy haired metallers seem to talk about, it would be the train coming back the next morning. Everyone with dumb grins, wide eyes, devil’s sunburn and empty bags of chemicals.

BETAMORPH RECORDINGS BIOGRAPHY

2009 has been the year for intergalactic label Betamorph Recordings. To our friends in China it may have been the year of the Ox, but in the dubstep calendar it’s been the year of the ALIEN. Growing from the bass heavy fruit of veteran DJ’s and producers Dylan James (aka Deej) and Chris McCahill (aka Megatron), Betamorph has been pummeling the scene with a twisted series of epic soundscapes and dirty symphonies. Nominated in the Best New Label category of the Dubstep Forum Awards 2009, Betamorph is now ready to conquer the world with their unparalleled brand of subterranean sci-fi.

Taking the visceral edge of Deej’s roots in the early nineties Los Angeles rave scene and combining it with Megatron’s seminal graphic imagery of a galactic future has helped Betamorph create a rare coalition between art and music. The science fiction imagery synonymous with every Betamorph release is symbolic of the ethos that dubstep’s lack of boundaries epitomize the innovation capable in a digital age. The Betamorph symbol not only represents a futuristically styled archive of groundbreaking music, but a fair deal for the artist, a perspective that many currently see as alien.

This has allowed Betamorph to build a prolific catalogue and extend their reach worldwide. The artist roster not only includes insane talent from Trill Bass, Richie August, ABZ and Mark Instinct but also releases from legends like DZ, Orien and Lukki. Already positioned at the forefront of dubstep evolution, Betamorph have also been picked up by Symphonic Distribution, featured as October’s label of the month. Although based stateside, Betamorph have also been harboring talent from around the globe. A partnership with mastering engineer Rick Simons aka SymbL and British journalist Simon Fogg has helped ensure that the label’s output will always match the quality of the imagery and the beats in professionalism, but also in never becoming predictable. Betamorph conquers across all platforms.

With the spotlight on 2010, look out for forthcoming releases from EMU, Pawn, Direct Feed, DZ, SymbL, Orien, Sook and Boot, Wascal and many others. There are even talks of working with Z Audio towards pressing vinyl to compliment digital releases and add a new strand to Betamorph’s empire. Since the label’s inception earlier this year, the Betamorph journey has been unreal. This is the future of dubstep: a genre currently undergoing Betamorphosis.
